Discussion Thread: A Christian Worldview of History

Having a worldview makes it more challenging to explain a particular type, especially among Christians or historians. A worldview is the way a person perceives the world around them. It acts as a lens through which they interpret beliefs, biases, culture, religion, and other aspects of life. For Christians, Scripture serves as their filter for understanding the world. Although it may sound unusual, religion generally functions as a filter for how individuals should live.

Now, for history, the question comes: should your worldview affect how history is perceived?

YES!

A person's worldview shapes their perceptions, but they should remain conscious of their own biases.

This is the struggle among all historians, as one thinks their view is correct over another's. By acknowledging their perspectives, they can account for them, leading to greater transparency and a more robust interpretation of the past.

Christian Worldview of History

What is it?

A Christian worldview of history interprets the past as a meaningful, purposeful story directed by God. It begins with creation, moves through humanity's fall, unfolds through redemption in Jesus Christ, and ends with his final return.

It is with this mindset that history becomes providential. The belief is that God is actively involved in, sustains, and guides human events toward a specific purpose.

Is providential history possible?

Yes, but it should always be expressed with humility and reverence for God's mystery (Fea, 80).

With that, Sidwell explains the purpose of providential history.

The constant activity of everyday life is as much a part of His providence as special manifestations. While some believe only specific events are related to God's providential history, the reality is the opposite. For a Christian historian, all of God's actions are integral to history; there is no alternative (Sidwell, 3).

With all this information, one question remains.
In what ways does a Christian historian incorporate their worldview into their work?

To answer effectively, it's helpful to emphasize what they should avoid doing.

Their focus should not be limited to Christians. A purposeful Christian historian should be able to write about any events or people, regardless of their religion. If the subject pertains to their religion, they should avoid bias. With that, the use of scripture should be limited, as it should not create spiritual meanings in their work.

What they should do is be as objective as possible and search for the truth. It is in scripture that we should always seek the answer. Whether the answer lies within a group of lies, we must be able to distinguish them.

Why is it important to me as a person?
And as a historian?
For me, the importance of a Christian worldview is that it helps us see that God is always in control. He controls all the nations. This shows that He has an established order. This order includes intelligence and truth throughout the universe.

For a historian, the importance of this worldview is that it drives one to seek truth and honesty. The past cannot be changed, but history is interpreted. These interpretations can sometimes be incorrect, but with Him, we have an outline. That outline allows the truth to be told; whether everyone believes it or not, it matters to the historian.
